Unemployment rate at 6.4% for Euro Area

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the euro area in April 2024 was 6.4%, compared to 6.5% in both March 2024 and April 2023. The EU unemployment rate was 6.0% in April 2024, stable compared to March 2024 and to April 2023.

According to Eurostat, the number of unemployed people in the EU in April 2024 was 13.149 million, with 10.998 million of those being in the euro area.

In comparison with March 2024, unemployment fell by 103,000 in the EU and 100,000 in the Euro Area.

In the EU, unemployment rose by 95,000 whereas in the euro area, it fell by 101,000. This is in comparison to April 2023.

 

 

Youth Unemployment

2.830 million young people (under 25) were unemployed in the EU in April 2024, with 2.272 million of those unemployed in the euro area. In the EU, the rate of youth unemployment decreased to 14.4% in April 2024 from 14.7% in March 2024, while in the euro area, it decreased to 14.1% from 14.3% in the previous month.

Compared with March 2024, youth unemployment fell by 44,000 in the EU, while in the euro area, it reduced by 19,000.

Compared with April 2023 youth unemployment rose by 141 thousand in the EU and by 54 thousand in the Euro Area.

Unemployment by sex

Women’s unemployment in the EU fell to 6.3% in April 2024 from 6.4% in March 2024, while men’s unemployment remained steady at 5.7% for both April and March 2024. Women’s unemployment in the euro area was 6.7%, down from 6.9% in March 2024, while men’s unemployment remained steady at 6.1% from the previous month.
